Nordic design always surprised almost everyone for the versatility that each design piece detains. Today Boca do Lobo studio checked its agenda and – surprise, surprise! – there was it, Helsinki Design Week figured out in the shining number of our agenda – 6th September.
Since 6th to 16th September, eleven days of minimalistic design will cheer up the distinct capital of Finland, Helsinki, a place where design is embedded into the open city design and concept, considered this year the World Design Capital. And as design runs in Helsinki’s veins, there will be multiples proposes during these two intense weeks. We let you with the most relevant ones.
Firstly, you surely can’t miss the two days of the Open Studios event (13th-14th) (entirely free!), coordinated by Mushrooming: basically, it is a really important line of this design week’s weft. Offices and companies will be open to the general public, constituting an unmissable opportunity to assist to the process of creation.
The intention is to show the other side that the client doesn’t see when he acquires a product: how the idea started, how it was built, where and when. If you’ll go, these questions will be answered. And when you’ll look to your new chair from Artek for instance, a finnish design brand, you’ll see all the history – and isn’t that much funny and satisfying?
Now that you realized the goal of this great event, we suggest you to take part in an organized tour to get the most out of your Open Studios experience or pop in to the studios any time during the event (6 pm-9 pm).
Also, guided cycling tours will be held on both days: at Thursday, 13 Sept to southern Helsinki and at Friday, 14 Sept to the Kallio area.
Secondly, we recommend you to go to the Design Market at the Cable Factory on 8-9 September. You’ll actually would astonishing to know how bustling this event is: thousands of design hunters and fashion lovers attend to this unique Design Market, where companies bring their extra stock to this sale, and bargain hunters find carpets, furniture, clothing, household design, etc.
This event is so popular that last year, more than 15,000 people visited it, and names such as Bruun Design, Globe Hope and Focus Fabrik brought design and fashion items to sell.
This year, the event will be larger than ever. Two large halls have been reserved in the Cable Factory, and the sellers will be organized into themed areas to allow buyers to find exactly what they want or to follow their own design interests. It starts at 11 am and finishes at 5pm.
Thirdly we highlight PechaKucha night, an irreverent and inedited initiative that aims to let creative people share their ideas, inspirations and visions with the world in the PechaKucha 20×20 format: 20 pictures and twenty seconds for the speaker for each slide. It will focus on Finnish and international design and – lucky you! – it is in English.
We also invite you to go the mostly days to the International Design Exhibition, a high profile interior design exhibition. From 8.9 to 16.9, great top international design and designers will showcase in the Old Customs Warehouse.
And if you are fan of parties –hooray! . you’ll be dazed by the Garden Party hosted by the Helsinky Design Week and the designer Vuokko Nurmesniemi, who will give an exclusive garden party at her home atelier in Kulosaari., an architectural gem.
