The Dutch Design Week was born in 1998. In that same year, the Vormgeversoverleg (a designer’s collaboration) organized the first Day of Design. The goal? Introducing entrepreneurs to designers. The event, which took place in Eindhoven, attracted more attention each year and grew exponentially. Later, in 2002, the Day of Design became the Week of Design and, ultimately, in 2005, it was renamed the Dutch Design Week (DDW). HARCORE is the new exhibition by Core Studio. After the success of last year’s POPCORE exhibit, they’re embarking on a new adventure. Even though last year’s exhibition was a playful and naive perception of our era, this year’s vision brings us down to Earth. The HARDCORE exhibition orbits around elemental materialities, substances that create a world which is ever-lasting. Exploring a counter digital movement from a designer’s perspective, objects that are physically heavy and digitally light.
Petit Pli creates the most technologically advanced children’s clothing in the market. In average, children grow up to 7 sizes in their first 2 years, which results in a lot of wasted clothing. Petit Pli‘s versatile waterproof shells are pleated in a way that can grow bi-directionally to costume-fit a wide range of sizes. The continuous size adjustment is a new, efficient way of approaching garment design, almost like one size fits all.
COLLECT is a fresh new fashion concept, thought by designers Karin Vlug and Lisa Konno. Together, the designers created ever-changing clothing, easy to use. A simple shirt can be morphed into a dress or a jumpsuit, using a very simple DIY system. It allows you to collect as many parts as you wish, such as different sleeves and collars, creating a wardrobe composed only of a few items, that provide you with endless looks.
This piece is a scaled visualization of the concept of digital material and aims to translate its theoretical principles to the physical world. The chair is assembled with aluminum tetrahedrons and spheres, which – when tightened by inner cables – form a feather-weighted octet truss lattice, inspired by crystal atom structures. When the tension is relieved, the shape vanishes and the material returns to its original state, ready to be reconfigured.
During the Dutch Design Week 2017, Artemis alumni will provide visual insight into the most important developments in society and how it is translated into innovative and applicable solutions for product, space and communication issues.
Leading the discussion on new borders for lightweight structural systems of the future, it was imaged and built a hypothetical aerial vehicle -a flying wing- inspired by the suggestive drawings of H. Miyazaki. Presenting a floating installation together with 1:1 scale details of the object, a process of experimentation was dissected, widening the spectrum of future structural wonders.
A search for the role of the craftsman in the modern time. Through wood, metal, and ceramics they are looking for a place for their skills in the here and now. This is also a claim made on the sensorial and physical.
